Nelson's surfing spots offer a unique blend of beach and point breaks, particularly around the Boulder Bank and Whangamoa. The region catches swells from multiple directions, making it a surprisingly consistent surf destination. Protected spots provide options in various conditions, while the main beaches work best with southerly winds.

Coastal and estuary surf spot just north of Nelson. Movable peaks along the shoreline, often superior near the estuary. Offers more reliable conditions than Nelson. Southerly winds bring offshore conditions. Plenty of choices along the shore when the swell is right.

Whangamoa

For those favoring their right hand, the Nelson boulder bank comes alive with substantial N swells. Schnappers, located on the northern tip by the bank's curve, performs best from low to mid tide. Meanwhile, The Cut, positioned at the entrance of the harbour, shows a preference for higher tides. Sourced from the south, light offshore breezes are ideal. Between Nelson and Whangamoa, several excellent spots can be found.

Gentle left break west of Nelson. Requires large N swells to activate. Optimal during higher tides. SW winds create the perfect offshore conditions.

Ruby Bay

Unveiled and ever-changing beach break along the western shoreline, situated at the foot of Farewell Spit. Take a chance. Favorable winds blow from the SSE. To the north, near Pillar Point, left-hand point breaks emerge on lower tides.
